Overview

This reference page provides conversion factors and tools for translating between common area units used in engineering, construction, land surveying, and manufacturing. Area is a two-dimensional quantity (length2\text{length}^2), so all conversion factors are squared versions of their linear counterparts.

Key Formulas

To convert an area value from one unit to another, multiply by the appropriate factor:

Atarget=Asource×source unit in m2target unit in m2A_{\text{target}} = A_{\text{source}} \times \frac{\text{source unit in m}^2}{\text{target unit in m}^2}

For example, converting square feet to square meters:

Am2=Aft2×0.09290A_{\text{m}^2} = A_{\text{ft}^2} \times 0.09290

For circular areas, the base unit conversion applies after:

A=πd24A = \frac{\pi d^2}{4}

Area Unit Converter

Use the table above to find the correct conversion factor. Enter your source area as the input, and the factor that multiplies it to reach the target unit.

For instance, to convert 100 ft² to m², enter 100 for the area and 0.09290 for the factor.

Engineering Notes

  • Squared relationship: A common mistake is using linear conversion factors for area. Since area is length × length, you must square the linear factor. For example, 1 in=25.4 mm1 \text{ in} = 25.4 \text{ mm}, but 1 in2=645.16 mm21 \text{ in}^2 = 645.16 \text{ mm}^2, not 25.4 mm225.4 \text{ mm}^2.
  • Precision in design: For structural and architectural drawings, conversions should maintain at least four significant figures. Rounding too early can cause misalignment or material shortages.
  • Land surveying: In the US, land areas are commonly reported in acres. Internationally, hectares are standard. One acre equals approximately 0.4047 hectares or 43,560 ft².
  • Metric prefixes: Note that the prefix applies to the base length, not the area. One square kilometer is (1000 m)2=1,000,000 m2(1000 \text{ m})^2 = 1{,}000{,}000 \text{ m}^2, not 1000 m21000 \text{ m}^2.
  • Barns: The barn (1028 m210^{-28} \text{ m}^2) is a unit used in nuclear and particle physics to express cross-sectional areas of atomic nuclei.
  • Always document your conversion factors in calculations for traceability, especially in regulated industries or formal submittals.
