Material Selection Notes

When selecting materials from this table, consider the following service conditions:

  • High Temperature Service: Materials prefixed with "H" (e.g., 304H, 316H, 321H) are designed for elevated temperature applications with enhanced creep resistance
  • Low Temperature / Cryogenic Service: Grades with "L" designation (e.g., LF1, LF2, LCB, WPL6) provide improved toughness at sub-zero temperatures
  • Low Carbon Grades: The "L" suffix on stainless steels (e.g., 304L, 316L) indicates maximum 0.03% carbon, reducing susceptibility to intergranular corrosion after welding

ASTM Specification Prefix Meanings:

  • *A105/A182/A350 — Forged fittings and flanges
  • *A216/A217/A351/A352 — Castings
  • *A234/A403/A420 — Wrought (butt-weld) fittings
  • *A106/A312/A333/A671 — Pipe
