Protection Techniques for Class/Division System
- Dust Ignition-proof: Enclosure prevents dust entry; internal arcs, sparks, or heat cannot ignite exterior surroundings.
- Explosion-proof: Withstands internal explosion of a specific flammable mixture without releasing burning or hot gases to the external environment, operating below safe temperatures.
- Intrinsically Safe: Incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy to cause ignition under normal or abnormal conditions. Operates on low power levels with safety barriers and energy limiters.
- Non-incendive: Non-sparking and incapable of causing ignition under normal operating conditions.
Protection Techniques for Zone System
- Encapsulated Protection (Ex m): Components encased in resin. Subdivisions: ma for Zone 0, mb for Zone 1.
- Flameproof (Ex d): Enclosure contains internal explosion without transmitting it to the surrounding atmosphere.
- Intrinsically Safe (Ex i): Similar to Class/Division, with subdivisions ia for Zone 0, ib for Zone 1, ic for Zone 2.
- Increased Safety (Ex e): High-quality, robust components with measures to reduce excessive temperatures and spark risks. Can be combined with flameproof protection.
- Oil Filled (Ex o): Components submerged in oil for protection.
- Pressurized/Purged (Ex p): Positive pressure maintained in enclosure with air or inert gas to prevent contact with ignitable atmospheres. Subdivisions: px or py for Zone 1, pz for Zone 2.
- Sand/Powder/Quartz Filled (Ex q): Components covered with sand, powder, or quartz.
- Non Incendive: Non-sparking under normal conditions, applicable to Zone systems.
