Leach Field Sizing
The required leach field area is calculated by dividing the daily wastewater volume by the soil absorption capacity:
Where:
- = required leach field area (ft²)
- = total daily wastewater loading (gallons/24hr)
- = soil absorption capacity (gal/ft²/24hr)
Example: For a single family dwelling with gallons in fine sand soil ( gal/ft²):
Leach Line Design Guidelines
| Parameter | Imperial | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum length per line | 100 ft | 30 m |
| Minimum spacing between lines | 10 ft | 3 m |
| Minimum trench depth | 12 in | 0.3 m |
| Elevation grade | ~1% | ~1% |
Note: In freezing climates, leach lines must be installed below the frost depth.
