Leach Field Sizing

The required leach field area is calculated by dividing the daily wastewater volume by the soil absorption capacity:

A=QCA = \frac{Q}{C}

Where:

  • AA = required leach field area (ft²)
  • QQ = total daily wastewater loading (gallons/24hr)
  • CC = soil absorption capacity (gal/ft²/24hr)

Example: For a single family dwelling with Q=1200Q = 1200 gallons in fine sand soil (C=4C = 4 gal/ft²):

A=12004=300 ft2A = \frac{1200}{4} = 300 \text{ ft}^2

Leach Line Design Guidelines

ParameterImperialMetric
Maximum length per line100 ft30 m
Minimum spacing between lines10 ft3 m
Minimum trench depth12 in0.3 m
Elevation grade~1%~1%

Note: In freezing climates, leach lines must be installed below the frost depth.
