Overview

Volume unit conversion is a fundamental task in engineering, manufacturing, and fluid handling. The SI unit of volume is the cubic metre (m³), but many industries use litres, gallons, barrels, or cubic feet depending on region and application. This page provides conversion factors between the most common metric and imperial volume units.

The source page introduces this as an online calculator for converting between common volume units. It also provides printable converter images and related Engineering ToolBox mobile app references; those sections are preserved below with the complete conversion tables.

Engineering Notes

  • US vs Imperial gallons — The US liquid gallon (3.785 L) is approximately 17% smaller than the Imperial gallon (4.546 L). Always specify which system is intended in documents and procurement.
  • Oil barrel — A standard oil barrel is 42 US gallons (158.99 L), not to be confused with other barrel definitions used in brewing or dry goods.
  • Metric prefixes — The metric system uses powers of 10 (centi-, milli-, etc.), making internal conversions straightforward. One litre equals exactly 1 dm³ and 1000 cm³ by definition.
  • Temperature dependence — Liquid volumes vary slightly with temperature. Precise metrology uses reference temperatures (e.g., 15 °C or 60 °F) when calibrating volumetric equipment.
  • Precision — When converting between imperial units and metric, carry sufficient significant figures to avoid rounding errors in multi-step calculations.
